And the West finally wins!

For the past several years the East has dominated the All-Star Game, this year things are different. It’s quite fitting really, especially given the parity of the league right now.

While the East did lead for most of the game our boys from the West always kept it a close game — even taking the lead a couple times in the first half. The third quarter was definitely controlled by the East. (more…)

More trade talks

According to some sources around this thing they call the internet there is a Roughneck player or two that may be switching uniforms after the All-Star break.

With the ‘Necks acquiring goal-tender Ryan Avery the word seems to be that Palidwor may be one of the players moving around. Some people are even saying the pot needs to be sweetened before any trades are made. Since we’re down to one 1st round draft pick the rumor is that another player — possibly a former Buffalo Bandit — is on the block as consideration.

Mixed opinions about McNish celebration

It’s been almost a week since McNish knocked out Edmonton Rush’s Stachniak during their last meeting and fans from both sides seem to have mixed thoughts about it. The split is pretty even amongst the people I’ve talked to. (more…)

Roughnecks acquire new net-minder

In a somewhat surprising move, Roughneck GM Kurt Silcott traded a first round draft pick for net-minder Ryan Avery. Before the trade, Avery played on the Buffalo Bandits practice team after being drafted in the 2nd round in 2002 by the Rochester Knighthawks.

To many fans there is some confusion surrounding this move. We already have Curtis Palidwor as a starting goalie and Andrew Leyshon as a strong backup. So where does Avery fit in? Who does he replace if anyone? If he’s not replacing either Palidwor or Leyshon then why are we trading a 1st round pick for a third string or practice goal-tender? More than a few people have expressed questions such as these. (more…)

New feature: Next game

As mentioned previously there will be several additional features added to the Go! ‘Necks! Go! website over the coming weeks and months. The first feature to be rolled out is the “Next Game” reminder on the right.

For now this will just show the next game for the Calgary Roughnecks but there is possibility for expansion. This is where I’d like to hear what you think. The next game feature can be expanded to include other games happening around the NLL as well. Is that something you would like the option to see? If so, do you want to see all upcoming games or would you rather choose what team you’d like to look at?

Other features will be coming down the pipeline soon enough and as always if you have any thoughts I’d love to hear them either via email or in the comments.

Tracey Kelusky named alternate captain

It was announced today that #17, Tracey Kelusky, will be wearing the big A for the west in the All-Star Game this weekend. Arizona defender Peter Lough will be the captain, and Colorado Mammoth forward Gavin Prout will serve as the other alternate captain for the west.

The east will be captained by Toronto Rock forward Jim Veltman. The two alternate captain spots will go to Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares and Rochester Knighthawks defenseman Steve Toll.

The Sportsnet network will be airing the All-Star Game live starting at 2pm MST from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

Game #8: Roughnecks take the Sting out of Arizona

After their harsh defeat Friday night by the expansion Edmonton Rush, the Calgary Roughnecks hopped a plane to Arizona Saturday to take on the first place Sting. I’m not the only fan that expressed a sever distaste for the way this season has been going but we were all hoping this game would be the turn around point. (more…)

Game #7: Roughnecks get rushed

I’m getting sick to my stomach just thinking about the game last night. Some may consider that a strong statement but it’s the truth. Game #7 had the Calgary Roughnecks playing the expansion Edmonton Rush for the third time. This was also the first game for Roughneck newcomer Grant Hamilton. (more…)

Lacrosse Rules: Illegal Substitution

During most of the games I’ve watched there have probably been at least one illegal substitution call at each of them — or at minimum every other game. All this time it hasn’t been clear to me what exactly an illegal substitution really is. After a little digging around the web this is what I’ve come up with.

An illegal substitution is classified as a bench minor penalty. That means if the offending team has possession the call is made immediately — if not it is delayed, much like a roughing penalty — and the offending player is sent to the penalty box for two minutes. That much was pretty evident by watching the games. (more…)

‘Necks need to capitalize on the power play

Granted I’ve only been watching the Roughnecks for the last 3 years but this has to be the rockiest start I’ve seen in franchise history. I’ve been asking myself why this year? What is causing such a back and forth between wins and losses? Part of the answer seems to be the power-play.

Our boys can’t seem to capitalize as much as they used to when they have the man advantage. Take, for example, our last game against the Toronto Rock. At one point, during the third quarter, we had a two-man advantage. Rightly so the ‘Necks took their time setting up plays and working on their passing game but we failed to score the entire time we had the advantage. That amounted to approximately 3 minutes of the game.

This has been a running theme throughout the season so far. I have yet to see stats that say we were even close to 50% on our power-plays — I’d even venture to say that 20% is pushing it. Most of the stats I see put us at 0–X (X obviously being whatever number of power-plays we have for the game). If we could create more scoring opportunities and keep the pace and tempo up during the power-plays I’m sure the stats would change dramatically in our favour.
